An Installer Explains Why an Epoxy Floor Coating Doesn’t Have to Be Slippery

Epoxy Floor Coating

Many homeowners considering an epoxy floor coating worry their floor will become slick whenever it gets wet. It’s a fair question, but the reality may surprise you.

A properly installed coating system can be designed to provide the right balance of traction, durability, and appearance. The key is understanding what actually creates slip resistance.

Why Exposed Flake Isn’t the Answer

Many people believe a glossy epoxy floor automatically means a slippery surface. Others assume the decorative flake broadcast is what provides traction. Neither is necessarily true.

The slip resistance of an epoxy floor coating is determined by how the final surface is engineered, not simply by how shiny it looks or how much flake is present.

Some 1-day coating systems rely on exposed decorative flake to create a rough texture. While this may seem effective initially, it is not designed to provide consistent long-term performance. As exposed flakes wear down, traction can become less uniform. The rough surface can also collect dirt and debris, making cleaning more difficult.

A quality garage floor coating should not depend on exposed flakes for slip resistance.

What Actually Creates Traction?

Professional installers can incorporate anti-skid additives directly into the final clear coat. These range from coarse to gentle textures, designed to enhance safety without compromising aesthetics. Common options include:

  • Quartz
  • Aluminum oxide
  • Polypropylene additives
  • Silica-based media

The type and amount of additive can be adjusted based on how the space will be used. For example, polypropylene additives are often used in areas with low to medium foot-traffic, indoor installations, or other spaces where an easily cleanable surface is needed.

Conversely, quartz and aluminum oxide are much more abrasive, creating a more secure footing, especially in wet conditions. They’re more difficult to clean and can be more visible, but they come in a variety of colors and can be “masked” by experienced installers.

A full-broadcast system fully encapsulates the decorative flakes beneath protective clear topcoats. The anti-skid additive is incorporated into the final coat, creating a surface that is durable, attractive, and easier to maintain.
